Rookie Tips

Before the Season
  • Get money sorted early. Sponsors take months to respond. Start asking in September if competitions are in March.
  • Read the rules document once before anything. Read it again when you disagree about what the rules say.
  • Find your sub-team leads — people who actually want to lead, not people you assigned. Leadership matters more than skills.
  • Build a simple intake mechanism first. Everything else depends on whether you can grab game pieces.
During Build Season
  • Your first design idea will fail. Build it anyway, fail fast, learn from it.
  • Drive train first. Arm second. Shooter third. Everything else is tuning.
  • Code runs late. Electrical runs later. Mechanical finishes on time and then waits. Plan for this.
  • Test on the practice field weekly, not the day before competition. Surprises suck.
  • If someone says "this will break under load," they are usually right. Listen to them.
Before Competition
  • Ship with parts you have tested in competition conditions. Bring backups for those parts.
  • Your practice times are lies. Match pressure is different. Drivers will panic. Expect it.
  • Make a spare intake, a spare wheel, spare bolts. Not extras — actual spares ready to swap.
  • Meet other rookie teams before competition. You will see them again. Be kind.
At the Event
  • Pit area = first impression. Clean, organized, labeled. Team identity lives here.
  • When your robot breaks, the pit crew is your lifeline. They need to understand the problem in 30 seconds.
  • You will lose matches. Many of them. This is normal. What matters is how you respond.
  • Talk to other teams. Mentors. Students. People at the event. This is half the value.
After the Season
  • Document what broke and why. Not "servo failed" — document the load, the condition, the hours run.
  • Video of every match. You will see things in footage you missed live.
  • Tell your story. Awards care about what you learned, not what you built.

Three Regionals, Two Finals: The 2024 Season

Our 2024 robot, BB-R8RS, reached the finals at both South Florida and Orlando Regionals and won the Industrial Design Award at two events.
